A Tradition of Besa
The Biçaku Family – Sheltering 26 Jewish refugees in Qarrishta, like many in Albania, lived by the unwritten but sacred code of Besa — a promise of protection and honor, especially to guests and those in need. When Nazi forces invaded, the Biçakus and their neighbors risked their lives to hide entire families in their homes, barns, and cellars.
None of the 26 Jews in Qarrishta were handed over. All survived.
A Legacy Carried Forward
Today, a descendant of the Biçaku family leads guided tours through Qarrishta, recounting the stories passed down to him. Visitors meet locals, see original homes, and feel the emotional weight of what happened here — not as tourists, but as witnesses.
